Barranquilla becomes the epicenter of international youth chess this week with the arrival of Anna Aleksandrovna Shukhman, the current U-20 World Junior Champion and holder of the Woman Grandmaster (WGM) title since early 2025. At just 16 years old, Shukhman arrives in Colombia as one of the most anticipated figures at the U-16 World Junior Chess Olympiad, which will be held from August 16 to 23 at the Dann Carlton Hotel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The young chess player, originally from Central Asia, has demonstrated a meteoric rise that positions her as a leading figure in the new generation of global chess. In 2025, she was crowned U-20 World Junior Champion <\/strong>after an unbeaten streak of five consecutive victories and a total of 9 points out of 11 <\/strong>possible. Last year, she won the Asian Junior Championship<\/strong> and finished runner-up in the Third Women’s Chess Championship in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, earning her direct qualification to the FIDE Women’s World Cup. Her rise began at an early age, when she became the U-10 European Champion in 2019. Currently, with an Elo rating of 2416, she is ranked fourth in the women’s junior world rankings.<\/p>\n\n\n

Shukhman’s presence in Barranquilla not only raises the technical level of the tournament but also represents a source of inspiration for new generations of Latin American chess players. The U-16 World Junior Olympiad brings together 90 teams from 46 countries in a nine-round Swiss format. Each team is made up of four players, with at least one female player per delegation, reinforcing the event’s commitment to inclusion and gender equality in the science of sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the Chess Confederation of the Americas (CCA), holding this type of event on our continent is of strategic importance. It not only strengthens Latin America’s international visibility as a host of high-level competitions, but also provides athletes in the sector with the opportunity to rub shoulders with renowned figures in the world of chess, creating opportunities for learning, exchange, and competitive growth. Barranquilla se convierte esta semana en el epicentro del ajedrez juvenil internacional con la llegada de Anna Aleksandrovna Shukhman, actual campeona mundial juvenil femenina sub-20 y portadora del t\u00edtulo de Woman Grandmaster (WGM) desde inicios de 2025. Con tan solo 16 a\u00f1os, Shukhman aterriza en Colombia como una de las figuras m\u00e1s esperadas de la Olimpiada Mundial de Ajedrez Juvenil Sub-16, que se celebra del 16 al 23 de agosto en el Hotel Dann Carlton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La joven ajedrecista, originaria de Asia Central, ha demostrado una trayectoria mete\u00f3rica que la posiciona como referente de la nueva generaci\u00f3n del ajedrez global. En 2025 se coron\u00f3 campeona mundial juvenil sub-20 tras una racha imbatible de cinco victorias consecutivas y un total de 9 puntos sobre 11 posibles. El a\u00f1o anterior, se adjudic\u00f3 el Campeonato Asi\u00e1tico Juvenil y obtuvo el subcampeonato en el Tercer Campeonato Femenino de Ajedrez en Samarcanda, Uzbekist\u00e1n, lo que le vali\u00f3 la clasificaci\u00f3n directa a la Copa del Mundo Femenina de la FIDE. Su ascenso comenz\u00f3 desde temprana edad, cuando en 2019 se proclam\u00f3 campeona europea sub-10. Actualmente, con un Elo de 2416, ocupa el cuarto lugar del ranking mundial juvenil femenino.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La presencia de Shukhman en Barranquilla no solo eleva el nivel t\u00e9cnico del certamen, sino que representa una fuente de inspiraci\u00f3n para las nuevas generaciones de ajedrecistas latinoamericanos. La Olimpiada Mundial Juvenil Sub-16 re\u00fane a 90 equipos provenientes de 46 pa\u00edses, en un formato suizo de nueve rondas. Cada equipo est\u00e1 conformado por cuatro integrantes, con al menos una jugadora femenina por delegaci\u00f3n, lo que refuerza el compromiso del evento con la inclusi\u00f3n y la equidad de g\u00e9nero en el deporte ciencia.<\/p>\n\n\n
